I shampoo my hair once a week with Organix Luxurious Moroccan Argan Creme Shampoo, and I co-wash daily using VO5 Conditioner (any of the $.78 ones from Wal-Mart), rinse it out, then apply a quarter-sized amount of Elasta QP Olive Oil & Mango Butter Moisturizer and saturate my hair with water from a spray bottle and massage until all of the “whiteness” from the conditioner disappears. Then I apply Hicks Total Transformations styling gel by covering the palms of my hands with the product, and coiling my hair using a circular motion with my palms - the longer I do this, the curlier my hair gets (takes about 30 minutes to achieve the coily/curly look; less time gives it a chunky twist out, undefined look). It leaves my hair softer than when I use EcoStyler Gel, but still gives a good hold.

I used to think that the chemicals in a relaxer were what got my hair to lay down… who knew that hair actually does what you TRAIN it to do… NATURALLY? When you have damn near no hair, and still minimum scalp visibility, that’s what you call #THICKhair.

When people ask me what I dislike most about being natural, my response is always this: My hair is NEVER DRY, and it’s ALWAYS WET. I prefer to do a wash and go everyday (1) because I’m a lazy natural and it’s fast; (2) I like for my hair to look shiny and fresh. I love the way my hair looks, but because of my hair’s thickness and low porosity, it doesn’t absorb my products very well. This means that if you look closely at my hair, even HOURS after I’ve styled it, you can spot clumps of gel and moisturizer. Also, I must have been born with a magnet in my head because people are ALWAYS reaching for it! My hairstyles attracted attention when I wore a relaxer as well, but it was like an unspoken rule that a Black woman’s hair is NOT to be touched under ANY circumstances unless you’re getting PAID to do so. Now that my hair is natural, people seem to have lost their manners (MINDS), and respect for my personal space. If they catch me off guard and do manage to get their grubby little paws in my curls, the first thing they yell out is “EWWW! It’s wet and/or sticky!” Or if someone hugs me before I have a chance to position my head just right, they usually pull back quickly with a soggy cheek. I know twisting or coiling my hair at night would remedy this issue, but again…I’m a LAZY natural. Say it with me… LAAAAZZZYYY. ↔ 🛀

Since all my friends either have my phone number or we follow each other on Instagram, I deleted all of my Facebook contacts (except for @aevinjude… I couldn’t bear to part with my #HairHero), and I only use my account to store my photos and share them with the natural hair pages I’ve liked. Facebook has a new feature that charges $1 to send a message directly to someone that is not on your Friends List. This gentleman, Lorenzo Buson, must have paid that dollar just to show me love all the way from Italy because this message popped up in my inbox. I ♥ my natural hair, but there’s something about rocking my ‘fro in particular that makes me feel STRONG… like I can take on anything the world has to throw at me. I often garner looks that range from admiration, to respect, to disdain, to disgust, to amazement whenever I wear it; but regardless of the reaction, without saying a word, I am making a bold, powerful statement. My hair speaks to others and shouts (among other things), “In spite of your opinion, I am NOT AFRAID to simply be and embrace MYSELF.”
